They had been traveling for days across the frozen tundra in search of the alleged hole to an inner world thought to be at the north pole.
Igor and Ivan began their journey many miles to the south where the climate was much different than what they were now facing. They had never traveled this far north into Siberia and even though they knew the weather would be quite different than what they experienced in their native land, it was much more severe than anything they could ever imagine.
Many miles were yet to be traveled before they reached their destination, and their circumstances were dire. They had ran out of many provisions and turned to eating their starving and dying dogs once they could no longer pull the sled.
The hole in the earth which lead to an inner world had long been rumored to hold many secrets to life and a gateway to a world where mastodons and many other ancient forms of life still roamed. A world where an inner sun provided light and warmth to what would be an otherwise cold and dark environment.
When they found this illusive entryway, it would be a boon to civilization and answer a lot of questions. It would put to rest many of the nonbelievers statements, and open a whole new field of understanding for others to pursue and acknowledge.
As the two soulmates in time trudged on, hope faded, their dogs had all now passed on, with their food dwindling and no water they must find the passageway soon, there was no turning back, they had come too far and had no provisions to provide nourishment for the return trip.
Finally with no food or water, first Igor succumed to the environment, then Ivan also. This journey had ended short of it’s goal.Once again the mystery would be unsolved, is there actually a hole leading to an inner world at the north pole, or is it just a legend that has no answer, only time will tell.
